Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance Announces 2018 Featured Marques

The 23rd Annual Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance, benefiting Today’s Harbor for Children, formerly known as Boys & Girls Harbor, has announced the Featured Marques for the event slated for Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6, 2018.
The Concours, presented by title sponsors Bay Area Regional Medical Center and the City of Seabrook, will feature the automobile Marques of Ferrari, Pierce-Arrow, and Super Cars. The event will also be honoring Vintage Wooden and Classic Glass boats. Owners of classic cars and antique wooden boats are encouraged to register for the judged competition. Judging takes place on Saturday, May 5. The classic boating side of the event is sanctioned by the Antique and Classic Boat Society, an international organization established to standardize the judging procedure. An incredible array of classic wooden boats and vintage fiberglass boats, both large and small, will be on display.
The weekend-long, nationally acclaimed classic car and vintage wooden boat show takes place each spring at the Lakewood Yacht Club in beautiful Seabrook, TX and attracts more than 15,000 attendees. The car and boat exhibitors come from every part of the United States, contributing to the more than $1.7 million that the Concours has raised to date for local charities.
Sixty car and 20 boat judges evaluate nearly 40 classes for cars and 20 classes for boats. In addition, Keels & Wheels welcomes celebrity and VIP judges to participate in honoring select vehicles and boats.
Invitations and entry forms for the 2018 Keels & Wheels event are available online. Because only 200 automobiles and 100 boats will be selected, it is important for submissions to be made as early as possible. Potential exhibitors are asked to submit one photo of the car or boat, along with year, make, model, owner information and a brief history of the entry. Keels & Wheels does not typically consider any automobiles newer than 1972 for entry in the event.

Lakewood Yacht Club Hosted J/105 North American Championships

Last week, 22 J/105s representing clubs from across North America, Bermuda and beyond raced on Galveston Bay to determine the 2017 North American Champion.
Lakewood Yacht Club also hosted the first J/105, Fleet 17 Fall Invitation Regatta last month to help local boats prepare for the North American Championships. Hosting the invitational must have paid off; three local racers took the top three spots.

8th Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta in the Record Books

Lakewood Yacht Club hosted the 8th Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta October 21-22, 2017.
Although the competitors were held onshore Sunday due to storms, the race committee ran a full day of racing on Saturday for 72 boats in a building breeze. The Judges had work to do on the water and onshore; after all was done, this year’s top finishers in each class were:

This year’s festivities also included a celebrity racing event on Clear Lake that spectators enjoyed watching and listening to humorous live commentary on from the newly opened BARge 295 in the location of the old Turtle Club. On Friday, Oct. 20, at 1600, J/Boat legend racers Jeff Johnstone, Scott Young, Farley Fontenot and Jay Lutz set off to measure their racing prowess on loaned-out J/24s in honor of J/Boats celebrating 40 years in the making.
Sailors, volunteers and guests enjoyed the annual Saturday night party, which included live music poolside by Jerry Angeley and by the LC Roots Band in the LYC lounge as well as a Frogmore Stew traditional shrimp dinner in the grand ballroom.
The LYC bar and lounge were at full capacity for the awards ceremony Sunday afternoon.

100+ Years of Sailing: A History of Sailing Clubs on Galveston Bay

Houston Yacht Club
Organized in 1897, the club was located on Buffalo Bayou in Houston. It was known as the Houston Yacht and Power Boat Club from 1905-1906, and the Houston Launch Club from 1906-1926. In 1927 the club went back to the original name Houston Yacht Club.
Always more than simply a social or boating organization, during the early years it was identified with some of the most fundamental developments in Houston’s growth.
The present day club house was built in 1927 in La Porte. Hurricanes and fires have left their mark on the original building but she still stands today. A charter member of the Gulf Yachting Association, the club is now over a hundred and twenty years old.
Seabrook Sailing Club
The club was founded in 1934 as a means to enjoy sailing with friends in Galveston Bay. That philosophy continues today. The original club was located along the Kemah waterfront.
In 1950 the club purchased the property at 1020 Todville Rd. in Seabrook. Hurricane Ike destroyed the club house in 2008. The new club house was rebuilt and completed through dedicated club members.

Texas Corinthian Yacht Club
Founded in 1938 to educate its members and their families in the art of sailing, seamanship and boat handling.
The original clubhouse completed in 1938 was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in September 2008. The new club house and rebuilt grounds were dedicated Jan. 1, 2010.

Galveston Bay Cruising Association
GBCA traces its origin back to 1947 when a small group of sailboat racing enthusiasts informally organized the club. The club existed and prospered as a letter head organization, without elected officers, bylaws, dues, or a home.
The Club was formally organized in 1954 with elected officials, bylaws and handicap races. The Friday night Rum Races are some of the most popular races run on Galveston Bay.

Lakewood Yacht Club
Founded in 1955 the club sits on 38 acres with water frontage on Clear Lake. It has four covered sheds and numerous docks. The original club just catered to power boats, but over the years sailboats kept showing up and the club kept growing. Lakewood Yacht Club will host the J-105 North Americans this fall.

2017 AND BEYOND: THE FUTURE OF SAILING
Learning to Fly with Next Generation USA
Whether you are a seasoned sailor or just getting your feet wet, you can’t help but look in awe at the America’s Cup boats – fast, foiling multihulls with a wing instead of a sail.
The United States, represented by team Next Generation USA, is one of 12 countries entered in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup. Each team is allowed seven days of practice on the AC45F prior to the event in June. That’s it, just seven days on a boat unfamiliar to anyone outside a small circle of America’s Cup Teams.
The AC45F is sailed with six crew members and each one has a critical job. The wing controls the overall power of the boat, so it is in constant motion. In order to get foiling, the boat needs to be going at least 16 knots and all of the crew must be on the windward side. Getting up to speed is like taking off in an airplane. The adrenaline is pumping but no one seems concerned that they are screaming downwind, six feet above the water on a 45ft carbon rocket.
Next Generation USA is more than just a group of young sailors. These guys are the face of our country and they will be representing the USA at the highest level of sailing.

Several Lakewood Youth Sailors Spending Christmas Break at Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Miami

Lakewood sent three C420 Teams with Coach Marek Valesek to their first C420 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta in Miami over Christmas break.
The two-person teams of Alex Wise/Laurel Tyson, Grace Bates/Pilar Blanco Midulla and Paul/Celia Houston as well as several other youth sailors were in full learning mode this past weekend, as accomplished sailor and Yale Assistant Sailing Coach Bill Healy afforded the racers his knowledge of C420 racing. Healy, spent two days at Lakewood Yacht Club training the spirited young sailors.
“We practiced in very breezy conditions,” said Healy. “If the kids see similar conditions in Miami they will feel much more comfortable since Galveston Bay doesn’t usually offer those types of conditions. The group has a whole is fairly fresh to the C420 class but no strangers to these large events. Look for them to post some great individual races and results.”
Strong 20-knot winds were enjoyed both days of the clinic, which focused on boat preparation, tuning guidelines, rigging the boats, and then basic trimming and hiking techniques as well as mark roundings. However, Sunday was 40 degrees colder than Saturday, so Healy, Valesek and the rest of the coaches utilized videos of high-level sailing to give the kids something to visualize. The young sailors took furious notes during the debriefings before braving the cold to practice the techniques on the water. A lot of kids went swimming, but there were notable improvements over Saturday’s performances.

Near Perfect Weather During the 30th Annual Harvest Moon Regatta

More than 140 boats took off from Pleasure Pier in Galveston on a beautiful, clear Thursday afternoon and raced down the coast to Port Aransas to complete the 30th Annual Harvest Moon Regatta.® Saturday, Oct. 15 was a busy day as the sailors were treated to a barbecue dinner and awards banquet followed by the Welcome Sailors Rum Party.
Lakewood Yacht Club was well represented among the race winners. John Barnett seized the coveted Bacardi Cup; Ted Greak earned the Cameron Cannon; Charles Herpich won the Commodore/John Broderick Memorial, and Jim Demarest took home the PHRF Spin Overall. Don’t Miss the 7th Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta Skippers’ Meeting

The 7th Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta Skipper’s Meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Friday, October 28 in the Lakewood Yacht Club Ballroom.
“All racers are encouraged to attend,” says 2016 J/Fest Southwest Regatta Chairman Dave Christensen. “You will receive important information and updates about the race and its surrounding activities from an informative agenda of speakers.”
J/Fest Southwest, hosted by Lakewood Yacht Club, will take place in Galveston Bay October 29-30. Entries in this year’s race include J-boats ranging from 22′ to 40′ in length.
Saturday evening, the L.C. Roots band will provide live entertainment and a traditional “Frogmore Stew” shrimp and sausage boil and drink specials will be available on the Lakewood Yacht Club grounds.
The awards ceremony will be held Sunday, October 30 in the Lakewood Ballroom.

High School Sailing Team Makes Texas History

The first ever Texas team has captured the Mallory Trophy in a 1st place win for their area district, SEISA, at the National Championship at the College of Charleston in South Carolina this month. Trained by Bay Access in cooperation with Lakewood Yacht Club, the winning team from Clear Falls High School qualified in April in a two day qualifier in Mississippi to represent the state of Texas at the High School Doublehanded Championship for the Mallory Cup as well as the High School Team Racing Championship for the Baker Cup in Ana Cortes, WA.
The co-ed racing fleet for Division-A was made up of 17-year-old Wiley Rogers and his 18-year-old crewmate Hunter Skinner who dominated both days to pull in a victory overall. Dane Byerly and Laura Masterson partnered with Julia Sheaffer and Bailey Spatz to pull ahead to the finish in Division-B.
While the first day of racing brought on a light, westerly breeze, sailing conditions became shifty. As the day progressed, the wind picked up to 15 knots, slowing down most of the teams. But by the end of the day, the Clear Falls team had pushed themselves to a significant lead.
Day two saw some of the most difficult conditions with light winds out of the North. The team fought hard to come out on top for the duration of 20 races. After two days of intense sailing, the Clear Falls team finished with a 38-point lead.
Training with fellow high school and college sailors in the Houston area, the Clear Lake Knights have worked hard to prepare for the championships.
Leaving behind a rich legacy of sailing, Byerly, Masterson, and Skinner will graduate this year and pursue college sailing at Saint Mary’s College of Maryland, the College of Charleston, and Jacksonville University. The graduates look forward to their second national championship for the Baker Cup in Anacortes, WA at the end of May.
Bay Access is a nonprofit charitable organization that promotes amateur sailing for kids and adults alike. Camp fees include professional instruction, sailboat, and life jacket for those who can’t bring their own. Classes will begin on June 20 and continue on week days through early August. Another Successful Keels and Wheels

A key ingredient to having a successful outdoor event is the weather and Mother Nature provided two nice days for the 21st Annual Keels and Wheels Concours d’ Elegance held the last weekend in April at Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook.
The country’s largest classic car and boat Concours gets better every year and this year was no exception. Tne crowd was able to view a rare display of the world’s finest examples of classic automobiles and an astounding collection of mint condition vintage wooden yachts.
The event is a draw for families as well as car and boat collectors and enthusiasts from all over the United States and the world. The beautiful grounds at Lakewood Yacht Club, located at 2425 NASA Parkway, make the perfect setting for exhibitors to show off their most prized vehicles while the picturesque Lakewood harbor is equally appropriate for displaying the pristine wooden boats. Visitors to the event are drawn back to the grace and beauty of days gone by.
Over the years the event has raised more than $1.5 million for local charities. Proceeds from this year’s event will once again go to the Boys & Girls Harbor. Attendees not only have a wonderful time but contribute to a worthy cause.
Keels & Wheels is the product of a lot of hard work and is the brain child of founders and Concours Chairmen Bob Fuller and Paul Merryman. Bob and his wife Judy, Laura Power, Paul and the Keels & Wheels Board are dedicated to making the event a big success every year. The Lakewood members who donate their time are also an important part of making Keels & Wheels able to continue year after year.
